Internet deals are a real gift

But what stores have over the internet are specialist sales people ready to answer questions or offer advice, which can be particularly helpful for shoppers who may not understand a product's capability or convoluted technical information.

A visit to a home theatre store found a friendly salesman well versed in DVD recorders.

But the store's price of $596 for a Panasonic recorder, with built-in hard drive, could not match a web price of $529.

The salesman was prepared to trim the price to $570 to do a deal.

Our survey found that some products offered on the internet were no longer available in stores.

Internet shoppers usually give up their ability to haggle for lower prices. Retailers are generally willing to cut prices, particularly on big-ticket items, to do fast deals.

Fonda family to reunite for fund-raiser By RICHARD L. ELDREDGE | Monday, February 18, 2008, 09:50 PM

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

For this year's 13th annual Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention fund-raiser, the focus will be on three generations of filmmaking by Henry, Jane, Peter and Bridget Fonda, along with Troy Garity.

In an exclusive for Buzz readers, we've been informed that G-CAPP founder Jane Fonda is planning a family reunion of sorts for this year's event, set for May 12 at the Woodruff Arts Center. Poncey-Highland's only two-time Oscar winner has invited brother Peter Fonda ("Easy Rider," "Ulee's Gold"); niece Bridget Fonda ("Singles," "Single White Female"); and son Troy Garity ("Barbershop, "Soldier's Girl") to share the stage with her as they discuss their films and the films of Henry Fonda with Turner Classic Movies host and Hollywood Reporter columnist Robert Osborne.

Garbage truck slams into Uptown house

Several muttered, "Thank God no one got hurt," and several more approached him with hugs and words of consolation.

Lewis' truck and his wife's blue Chevy Cavalier both sustained damage when the garbage truck ran into the property.

Lewis also said he probably lost furniture and several of his paintings as emerged from his living room's rubble, past the front of the garbage truck and onto a sidewalk littered with damaged cars.

Three other cars sat damaged nearby, including neighbor Terrell Knott's black Chrysler 300. The hood on the passenger side was crumpled like a torn up aluminum can.

"I'm just glad no one got hurt," said Knotts, who was parked two doors down. "It's a miracle."

The house didn't collapse, but two of the four living room walls are substantially damaged.

It's the hottest time of the year for spicy, saucy wings

The way Michael Deary sees it, when you're a football fan, you gotta wing it.

On game days, you can smell the excitement in Deary's Elk Grove, Calif., kitchen as he starts frying up his Buffalo wings early so he'll have a big pile for friends and family to tackle by kickoff.

"I'm a fanatic about them," says the longtime Raiders fan. "My friends come over, and they're like, 'You're cooking wings at 8 in the morning?'"

Wings have found a winning teammate in football -- with wing consumption peaking on Super Bowl weekend. Last year, more than 1 billion wing servings flew into the sunset and into human gullets during the big game weekend, the National Chicken Council reports.

FAMILY SERVICE: On Mothering Sunday, March 2, in St Peter's church at 10.30am. This is always a well attended service and gives the children a chance to thank their mothers by presenting them with posies during the service. OFF THE ROAD: Yet again a motorist must have been travelling at speed as they approached the bend on the B2116 near the entrance to Novington Lane last week. Lets hope that the driver, and passengers if there were any, escaped uninjured from the Land Rover that crashed into a field nearby. I have been told that it was Plumpton College students who were in the vehicle and it appears they were very lucky as they were thrown out. N WATCH: As two of my co-ordinators have moved away, the following is an update of co-ordinators for the Hamsey, Cooksbridge and Offham area.

Top UN official: Gaza situation 'grim'

Later Friday, a powerful blast went off in the house of a senior Islamic Jihad activist, killing him, his wife, three sons, and three neighbors, medics and an Islamic Jihad spokesman said. One of his daughters was critically wounded. Islamic Jihad said an Israeli airstrike targeted the house, but Israel denied it.

John Holmes, undersecretary-general for humanitarian affairs, visited Gaza during the day and urged that the territory's borders be reopened to relieve the suffering.

Israel and Egypt severely restricted access to Gaza after the Islamic militant group Hamas seized the territory by force in June. Since then, only a few dozen trucks carrying food, medicine and other staples have been permitted into Gaza every day, while most exports are banned.

The closure has driven up poverty and unemployment, and the U.N.

Anti-obesity campaign in Britain goes big

The British government last month outlined a new strategy, including a £75 million, or $145 million, three-year advertising campaign, to try to get Britons to slim down. Almost two-thirds of adults and about a third of children in Britain are overweight or obese, health officials say.

Some people in the advertising industry are calling for the campaign to resemble the recent anti-poverty initiative that went under the name "ONE" in the United States and "Make Poverty History" in other countries. Millions of people bought white wristbands to signal their commitment to the movement. To be effective, advertising executives say, the anti-obesity initiative needs to be similarly broad-based.

"We're saying, if you just run some advertising and then forget about it, it's going to have zero effect," said Hamish Pringle, director general of the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising, which represents British advertising agencies.

Hello from Harvard!

Enjoy your time, good luck in the competition, and take lots of pictures. Memories of high school trips will stick with you forever, and it's nice to be able to look back over the pictures many years later.Posted by: New1 on Fri Feb 15, 2008 11:08 am .
